Damon and Pythias, also called Damon and Phintias, in Greek legend, a celebrated pair of friends who came to signify the willingness to sacrifice oneself for the sake of a friend. Versions of the tale differ, but the best known of these variants is that told by Cicero in De Officiis (“On Moral Duties”).
